Professor Custovic has developed the NHS Allergy service at the University Hospital of South Manchester (UHSM), and has driven a step change in the size and breadth of clinical activity in the last decade. As a result, the UHSM Allergy Centre now offers diagnosis and management of adult and paediatric patients with a range of allergic conditions, including anaphylaxis, eczema, asthma, allergic rhinoconjunctivitis, drug allergy, insect venom allergy, latex allergy, urticaria and angioedema with further expansion in the neglected area of food allergy. The Allergy centre has provided care, support and reassurance for many patients referred by their GPs and those who have experienced allergic reactions within the Trust, offering also a comprehensive immunotherapy service and wide range of day challenges including oral and intravenous drug challenges and food challenges.
He has influenced the development of the UK national policy on how allergy can be better dealt with in the NHS through the membership of the National Allergy Advisory Group and presented key evidence to the House of Lords Science & Technology Enquiry into Allergy Services in the UK that led to the implementation of a new model of allergy care currently being trialled in the North West. He is a member of the North West Allergy & Clinical Immunology Network Strategy Board which co-ordinates the bringing together of tertiary allergy providers and the supporting services in primary and secondary care to form an inter-city allergy networked centre.
He served as a Secretary of the British Society for Allergy and Clinical Immunology (BSACI) in two terms (2000-3, 2009-12) and represented allergy on the Royal College of Physicians Specialist Advisory Committee. He made major contribution to allergy training as a Programme Director for Allergy (July 2008-current), and acts as the BSACI-endorsed Specialty adviser for the North Western region for Allergy & Clinical Immunology. He currently serves as a President of the Asthma section of the European Academy of Allergy & Clinical Immunology (EAACI) and is a member of several World Allergy Organisation (WAO) Committees.
He acted as a Research Group Leader in the School of Translational Medicine, University of Manchester (2008-12); his success has been recognised by recent appointment as a Centre Lead for Respiratory Medicine and Allergy in the Institute of Inflammation and Repair (2012-15).
Professor Custovic delivered invited lecture at more than 150 major international congresses, including lectures at the annual meetings of the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, European Respiratory Society, American Thoracic Society, American Academy of Allergy Asthma and Immunology, World Allergy Organisation, International Congress on Paediatric Pulmonology, British Thoracic Society, British Society of Immunology, British Society of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health and numerous national paediatric and allergy societies (including Australian, Canadian, South African, Japanese, Swiss, Cypriot, Greek, Croatian, Italian, Danish, Turkish Society etc.)
At the time when prevalence, severity and complexity of allergy in the population continues to increase, with serious problems in the provision of allergy healthcare and the future of the specialty, Professor Custovic brings unique expertise of a joined-up approach to provision of clinical services in allergy, clinical research and education.
Prof Custovic's extraordinary research contributions have been in areas of genuine unmet clinical need, especially prevention of asthma and food allergy. Of particular merit has been his recent discovery of a novel diagnostic tests for peanut allergy, which demonstrated how internationally competitive medical science can advance health and welfare and be translated into the benefit for patients.
