About me

I am a Consultant in Sports and Exercise Medicine working in the Centre for Musculoskeletal Medicine at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital.

I have extensive knowledge and experience of working in elite sport over several years. Having held some senior positions in High Performance Teams, I have been accountable for the safe return to high level competition for many sportspeople with significant and/or complex joint, muscle and tendon injuries.

Every injury is unique and personal, requiring specialist individual management for all levels of physical demand. Having worked with top specialists and rehabilitation teams nationally and internationally, I have the experience to appreciate detail and know what works best for many challenging injuries and pain presentations in people from all walks of life.

I am a fellow of the UK Faculty of Sports and Exercise Medicine. I led and managed a team of medical and rehabilitation experts as the Head of Medical Services at Aston Villa FC for several years. I have previously held positions as Chief Medical Officer at Walsall FC and medical officer roles at the English Institute of Sports which included looking after Paralympic athletes. I have worked at the London 2012 Olympics as a field of play team leader. I have experience seeing and treating military personnel as a Sport Physician at Cranwell Regional Rehabilitation Unit.

With the support of Public Health England and Birmingham City Council, I was honoured to receive funding to create, design and lead on an initiative called Prescription for Exercise. It focused on helping clinicians deliver physical activity advice for inactive patients with, or at risk, of chronic disease. It was a Priority initiative scheme for Birmingham Clinical Commissioning Group in 2013 to 2015 and was taken up by over 80 GP surgeries across the city.

My passion lies in Musculoskeletal and Sports Medicine, where I use point of care ultrasound into my daily practice to deepen understanding and refine management plans. Proficient in using imaging to guide injection treatments, I have experience in novel therapies for osteoarthritis, cartilage, tendon, ligament and muscle injuries. I have strong experience in managing overload injuries presenting in the groin region and bone stress. I have a special interest in the detailed diagnosis, prognosis and treatment options of all muscle injuries. I've shared my expertise through presentations and peer review research on hamstring injury.
