About me

My main area of expertise is the treatment of patients with pain from cancer, and the pain associated with the treatment of cancer.
I work at the Royal Marsden Hospital (Consultant since 1996), where I lead a team of consultants, nurses and other health care professionals focusing on the treatment of cancer-related pain.
In conjunction with the team, I offer a comprehensive approach to pain management including;
• medication
• physical and psychological treatments
• interventional pain treatments
• complimentary therapies (acupuncture, massage etc.)
• comprehensive pain assessment
• patient surveillance.
My practice is within the Royal Marsden Hospital (Chelsea and Cavendish Square), where I work in close cooperation with oncologists, surgeons and specialist nurses to offer the best possible treatment for patients with cancer.
I adopt a patient centred approach, recognising the value of individual patient assessment, and the importance of physical and emotional factors in treating pain.

Areas of interest

Cancer pain
• pain as a result of all types of cancer including metastatic;
• persistent pain after surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy;
• neuropathic pain;
• chemotherapy induced peripheral neuropathy;
• treatment of oral mucositis

Procedures
• Medications (e.g. opiates, pregabalin, topical patches etc.)
• Nerve blocks (e.g. steroid injections, coeliac plexus block)
• Links with psychological medicine (for cognitive behavioural therapy)
• Links with physiotherapy (for rehabilitation)
• Links with more invasive treatments such as Spinal Cord stimulators, Intrathecal pumps

Impact
My main aim is to make patients with cancer more comfortable.
I offer a full assessment of the patients’ pain and the way it affects their life.
I then commence analgesic treatments, and offer close follow up and adjustment of medications and other pain relieving treatments.
