About me

Mr Adam Ajis is a Consultant Foot and Ankle Surgeon specialising exclusively in foot and ankle surgery. He is an NHS Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon at University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust and has been a consultant since 2013. He consults and operates privately at Nuffield Health Brighton Hospital and Goring Hall Hospital, Worthing. Surgery is also available at St Richard's Hospital, Chichester.

Mr Ajis provides surgical opinions for painful, deformed, arthritic or injured feet and ankles. His practice focuses on patient-specific total ankle replacement, minimally invasive keyhole bunion surgery, big toe arthritis, lesser toe deformity, reconstruction, and acute and post-traumatic conditions. Second opinions are welcomed.

Ankle replacement and ankle arthritis

Mr Ajis has extensive experience in total ankle replacement for severe ankle arthritis. He uses CT-based three-dimensional planning and patient-specific instrumentation to plan implant size, alignment and positioning around each patient's anatomy. This motion-preserving treatment may suit selected patients who wish to retain ankle movement rather than undergo ankle fusion. He treats post-traumatic ankle arthritis, ankle deformity, failed previous surgery and revision ankle replacement. Patients considering ankle replacement or fusion receive clear advice based on symptoms, standing X-rays, CT findings, activity level and goals.

Minimally invasive bunion and forefoot surgery

Minimally invasive percutaneous bunion correction has been a core, high-volume part of Mr Ajis's practice since 2013. Correction is performed through small portals using instruments under X-ray guidance, with the bones stabilised using low-profile fixation. This can reduce soft-tissue disruption and scarring, and most patients can walk in a protective postoperative shoe on the day of surgery.

He also performs revision bunion surgery and correction of hammer toes, claw toes, mallet toes, crossover toes, bunionettes, plantar plate injuries and painful forefoot deformity. Several problems can often be corrected during the same operation as a complete forefoot reconstruction.

Big toe arthritis

For big toe arthritis, or hallux rigidus, treatment is tailored to the stage of arthritis, remaining movement, activity level and footwear needs. Options include minimally invasive cheilectomy and joint-preserving procedures for suitable early disease, or first metatarsophalangeal joint fusion for advanced arthritis.

Trauma and reconstruction

Mr Ajis remains actively involved in NHS trauma care and treats acute foot and ankle fractures, fracture complications, ligament injuries, tendon ruptures, Lisfranc injuries and consequences of previous trauma. His practice also includes ankle arthroscopy, ankle instability surgery, Achilles tendon surgery, flatfoot and cavus foot correction, midfoot and hindfoot arthritis, fusion surgery and revision reconstruction.

Training, teaching and research

Mr Ajis trained in Cheshire and Merseyside before an international fellowship at the Institute for Foot and Ankle Reconstruction in Baltimore, USA, followed by a second specialist foot and ankle fellowship in the UK. He holds BMedSc (Hons), MBChB, MRCSEd and FRCS (Tr & Orth), and is a member of BOFAS and AOFAS.

He is an Honorary Clinical Lecturer at Brighton and Sussex Medical School, teaches on foot and ankle courses and has published in Foot & Ankle International, The Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery and Foot and Ankle Clinics. He contributed specialist expertise to NICE.
