About me

Mr Vathanan is an experienced Gynaecologist with more than 23 years of experience in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. After completed his initial and postgraduate training in Sri Lanka, he moved to UK in 2004 and completed his specialty training in Yorkshire and London Deaneries. He is currently working as a Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Frimley Health NHS, Heatherwood and Wexham Park Hospitals where he is the Lead consultant for Early pregnancy services. He is the lead for Laparoscopy and Gynaecology simulation for Health Education England, Thames Valley.

In addition to his general Obstetrics and Gynaecology training, Mr Vathanan has undergone advanced training in minimal access surgery, endometriosis, early pregnancy and emergency gynaecology at Imperial College Healthcare, London, Chelsea and Westminster Hospitals, London and North West London Hospitals, London. He has completed a post graduate diploma in Gynaecology and early pregnancy ultrasound scanning at Kings College London. He underwent specialist training in laparoscopic surgery and endometriosis at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital and its Endometriosis centre. He has published several articles in peer reviewed journals and presented in national and international conferences.

He specialised in minimal access surgery. Through his experience in minimal access surgery, he aims to perform advanced gynaecology surgeries with minimal scars in the tummy, usually with 3 x 5mm scars in the tummy.

Mr Vathanan believes in holistic approach in patient care and his priority is patient involvement in decision making, patient safety, honesty and transparency. He provides highest possible quality of care to his patients by practising evidence based medicine and easily available for advice. He specialises in advanced laparoscopic surgery including laparoscopic hysterectomy, management of ectopic pregnancy, ovarian cysts, endometriosis, fibroid removal, chronic pelvic pain and hysteroscopic surgeries including hysteroscopic removal of fibroids and reproductive hysteroscopic surgeries. He is an expert in the management of early pregnancy, emergency gynaecology complications (including miscarriage and ectopic pregnancy), management of recurrent miscarriages, transvaginal ultrasound scanning for gynaecology and early pregnancy (including 3D scanning). He runs a dedicated recurrent miscarriage clinic at his NHS trust.

He is a clinical tutor for Southampton O&G medical students, Royal College of O&G (RCOG) Part 3 examiner, Lead for Health Education England, Thames Valley Laparoscopy and Gynaecology simulation training, Lead for Gynaecology GIRFT (Get it right first time) NHS initiative at Wexham Park Hospital, Lead for Fibroid MDT at Wexham Park Hospital.
He is married with 2 children. He likes travelling and charity work.
