I started my gastroenterology speciality training programme in the Oxford training region in 2000, and this was where I developed my specialist interest in inflammatory bowel disease and visceral (gut) pain. I spent 5 years working in the prestigious inflammatory bowel disease unit at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford and went on to research how the brain processes pain generated from the gut in 2002 at the Functional MRI Centre at the John Radcliffe Hospital. I was awarded a PhD from Oxford University for my research work in 2006.
Having completed my Gastroenterology Specialist Training I joined the team at the Gloucestershire Royal Hospital in 2007 as Consultant Gastroenterologist. Since then I have developed my current area of specialist expertise in endoscopy and endoscopy training. I am Co-Director of the Gloucestershire Endoscopy Training Centre (http://www.jets.nhs.uk/Centre/Default.aspx?SiteId=4) which has national and international reputation for providing high quality training. We provide courses for both endoscopy trainees and established endoscopists who want to improve their diagnostic, therapeutic and endoscopy teaching skills. I was appointed as one of the county’s four bowel cancer screening colonoscopists in 2012. I am currently the clinical director for bowel cancer screening in Gloucestershire.
I am the National Lead for the JETS e-portfolio which is a national web-based portfolio for endoscopy trainees. My current research interests focussed on quality in endoscopy training. I sit on the national (JAG) working groups focussed on improving endoscopy training and assessment in the UK.
