About me

I qualified in 1992 from St. Bartholomew’s Medical College, London, with honours colours of the college. I then completed my basic surgical training in London gaining my general Fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1996. I spent two and a half years in full time research in the premiere American Cardiothoracic Centre, The Cleveland Clinic Foundation, being awarded my Master of Surgery from the Royal College of Surgeons of England for the work I performed there.
I then entered specialist Cardiothoracic training on the West Midlands rotation gaining my specialist Fellowship of the Cardiothoracic Surgeons of England, FRCS (C-Th), and then shortly afterwards was allowed onto the Specialist Cardiothoracic register in 2006. I was appointed as Consultant Thoracic Surgeon to the Birmingham Heartlands Hospital where I have held this position since 2007. There I previously led the lung cancer services, and lead on training as the regional training programme director for Cardiothoracic Surgery for the West Midlands deanery.
I am the co-chair and lead Thoracic surgeon organiser on the internationally recognised Birmingham Review Course in Cardiothoracic surgery. I am also a regular faculty member on a number of Royal college of surgeons of England, Society of Cardiothoracic Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland, as well as European Association of Cardiothoracic Surgeons courses.
I am the Royal College of Surgeons of England Regional specialist professional affairs advisor for Cardiothoracic surgery for the West Midlands, Royal College of Surgeons assessor sitting on Consultant Surgeon advisory appointment committees, and MRCS examiner. I was recently elected to sit on the national Specialist Advisory Committee (SAC) for Cardiothoracic surgery. I practice all aspects of adult thoracic surgery with a specialist interest in superior sulcus tumours, tracheal surgery, sleeve resections, as well as VATs Lobectomies, the latter I co-introduced after spending time in Edinburgh and Copenhagen to learn the technique. I am a keen innovator and recently designed and implanted the UK's first 3D printed breast bone implant in a patient with a large breast bone defect.
