Mr Shafi Ahmed qualified from Kings College Hospital Medical School in 1993, trained in London and obtained his specialist registration in general and colorectal surgery. He was appointed as a Consultant General, Colorectal and Laparoscopic Surgeon at Barts and the London NHS trust in 2007. He performed research on the genetics of colorectal cancer and obtained his PhD from the University of London.
He works in the Centre for Academic Surgery at The Royal London and St Bartholomew's hospitals and has established minimal invasive colorectal surgery within the trust. He is pioneering single incision laparoscopic colorectal surgery (virtual scarless surgery) and also works with liver surgeons to pioneer simultaneous laparoscopic liver and bowel resections fro cancer. He is the lead clinician and Multi Disciplinary Team lead for colorectal cancer at Barts and The London NHS Trust. His main interests are colorectal cancer, diverticular disease, inflammatory bowel disease, coloproctology and the modern management of haemorrhoids. He still maintains a general surgical practice including hernia and gallstone surgery.
He has set up iHealth which is a modern way of managing NHS patients offering an alternative pathway that is consultant delivered and become a provider of surgical care.
Shafi Ahmed is also an Honorary Senior Lecturer and is the Associate Dean at Barts and the London Medical Cchool. He is responsible for the delivery of the undergraduate curriculum at Barts and the London NHS trust.
He is also the Royal College Tutor and Training programme Director for core surgical trainees at UCLP as well as educational supervisor for the Royal College of Surgeons and sits on the Higher Surgical training committee
He is a member of the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland, Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland, European Association of Endoscopic Surgeons. He is an active member of the local community in Tower Hamlets appearing in a regular TV health show to promote local health issues. He speaks fluent Bengali and Sylheti. He is also on the board of Proshanti a local charity community project to set up a health programme in Bangladesh. He is a medical director of Beani Bazar cancer Hospital which hopes to be the first cancer hospital in Bangladesh.
