About me

Before becoming a Consultant in 2007, Mr McMullan spent 11 years training as an ophthalmologist with extensive
sub-specialisation in oculoplastics (facial and eyelid plastic surgery) – in both the UK and the USA.

In the UK Mr McMullan honed his skills in functional, non-cosmetic surgery whilst in the States he refined his expertise in cosmetic procedures at the Center for Facial Appearances, home to two of the leading ophthalmic plastic surgeons in America.

His training both sides of the Atlantic has enabled Mr McMullan to choose the best practice & techniques from both to optimise results for both patient and surgeon.

A Cambridge graduate with a PhD in molecular genetics Mr McMullan has retained an interest in research, both clinical and scientific. He has published numerous peer-reviewed papers and presented at national and international conferences.

His NHS responsibilities have included being Chair of the Local Professional Network (part of NHS England), set up to establish best ways of delivering ophthalmic care to the community within Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and Northamptonshire. He was Lead Clinician in the ophthalmology department at Northampton General Hospital until he handed over the reins in February 2016. He is current an external examiner for Christchurch Canterbury University. He is also the Assistant Director of Undergraduate Studies.

Mr McMullan is a member of the British Oculoplastic Surgery Society and the European Society of Oculoplastic & Reconstructive Surgery (ESOPRS). He is a previous ESOPRS junior award winner. He was made a Trustee of NAB, the Northamptonshire Association for the Blind, in 2014.
