Mr McAndrew qualified from St George's Hospital Medical School, Tooting. He underwent Basic Surgical training in Yorkshire and undertook two years' full-time research in Sheffield. This was submitted as a thesis titled 'The Radiographic Classification of Callotasis' and an MD was awarded in 2004.
Mr McAndrew underwent Higher Surgical training in Trauma & Orthopaedics in the Wessex Region. He spent one year as the Ilizarov Fellow in Chertsey, Surrey undergoing sub-specialist training in trauma and limb reconstruction. He was appointed to the Royal Berkshire Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in July 2007 as a Locum Consultant Trauma Surgeon and took up his substantive post in November 2007. He brought the Ilizarov system to Reading and set up a limb reconstruction service undertaking complex trauma and deformity correction. He is the lead trauma surgeon with an interest predominantly in the lower limb.
Mr McAndrew is the Director of Trauma in the Trust and was part of the successful bid to have the Royal Berkshire Hospital designated a Trauma Unit. Since then he has continued to chair the Trauma Committee, (a multidisciplinary group that works to improve the care of trauma patients in Reading). He is the Orthopaedic representative of the Royal Berkshire Hospital to the Thames Valley Trauma Networks.
He was the Clinical Director for the Trauma and Orthopaedic service at the Royal Berkshire Hospital from January 2014 until 31 January 2017.

Consultant Trauma Surgeon, Royal Berkshire Hospital
He is the chair of the Thames Valley and South Midlands CRN (Comprehensive Research Network) Injuries and Emergencies Specialty Group. This post means that he is involved at a national level in the management of multi-centre trials that deal with the treatment of trauma patients.
He is or has been the principal investigator (PI) for 16 NIHR (National Institute for Health Research) clinical trials in orthopaedic trauma, five of which are currently in recruitment.
Mr McAndrew is an avid supporter of the Ireland and London Irish rugby teams.

In January 2017 he was given the NIHR musculoskeletal trauma trials award of the Best Principal Investigator.
He was awarded a MD for his thesis on the Radiographic Classification of Callotasis in Paediatric Tibial Lengthening.
He has 10 published papers in peer reviewed journals, and 14 abstracts.
He has presented 20 papers at national and International meetings.
