I am a consultant thoracic surgeon and qualified at Sheffield University in 1993. I undertook higher surgical training in cardiothoracic surgery in Yorkshire and was appointed to a substantive consultant position in 2007 in one of the largest regional centres for thoracic surgery in Europe.
I perform the full range of thoracic surgery, covering both benign and malignant conditions. The bulk of my practice involves treating people with primary lung cancer and metastatic cancer that has spread to the lungs. I perform minimally invasive (key-hole) surgery where possible. I am part of the team in Leeds involved with the surgical treatment of Emphysema, including Lung Volume Reduction Surgery and Endobronchial Valves, as part of a multi-disciplinary approach.
I have an interest in Chest Trauma including fixation of rib fractures where appropriate. I am also involved in the surgical correction of chest wall deformities.
I am particularly interested in quality of life after thoracic surgery, and patient satisfaction, including reducing hospital length of stay. I recognise the importance of continuous professional development to ensure that I am delivering the highest standard of care to my patients.
I am heavily involved in Education and Training and am clinical and educational supervisor to junior and higher cardiothoracic surgical trainees in Yorkshire.

Consultant Thoracic Surgeon
St James's University Hospital, Leeds
I am involved in an on-going study in Leeds looking at early diagnosis of lung cancer. This is aimed at identifying patients at an earlier and therefore potentially more treatable stage.
Mesothelioma, a disease caused by exposure to asbestos, is increasing. We have not yet reached the peak incidence of this as yet incurable disease. I am the principal investigator in Leeds of a study looking at the role of radical surgery in this condition.
My overriding passion is spending time with my young family. I also enjoy travelling, eating out and fine wine (time permitting). I am a novice skier and have been for over 15 years!
