After training in Dundee, Mr Carmichael did his Orthopaedic training on the Birmingham rotation. He was appointed Consultant in Nottingham in 2006 and moved to Rotherham in 2008 where he was appointed as Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with a special interest in Foot and Ankle Surgery. In 2009 he was made Clinical Director for the Orthopaedic Department
His main interest is foot and ankle surgery, in which he is fellowship trained. He carries out the whole range of foot and ankle procedures, from toe surgery to complex foot and ankle reconstructions. He also does toe and ankle replacements for arthritis, and ankle arthroscopy. Mr Carmichael is also trained in Sports Medicine and can offer advice regarding non-operative treatment of a large number of sport related conditions.
Mr Carmichael’s other interests include arthroscopic knee surgery, replacement surgery for the knee including both total and partial knee replacements, and primary hip replacements.
As Clinical Director, as well as overseeing a department that incorporates both hospital and community services, he also is still actively involved in teaching both medical students and trainee doctors. He is an Advanced Trauma Life Support instructor, and works regionally to develop and enhance the provision of trauma services in South Yorkshire.
Currently, he is the Director for Surgery, encompassing all the surgical specialties as well as musculoskeletal services, theatres, anaesthetics and critical care.
