About me

Dr Karim Saad MBChB, FRCPsych

Consultant Psychiatrist

I am a consultant psychiatrist specialised in the assessment and treatment of mental illness in older adults; and in dementia and cognitive impairment, including younger onset dementia.

In addition to my private practice, I am a full time Consultant Psychiatrist at Coventry & Warwickshire Partnership NHS Trust; and I have a regional role as Clinical Director, West Midlands Dementia Clinical Network, at NHS England.

I run outpatient clinics for:

Specialist Assessment and treatment of psychiatric illness in older adults including Depression, Anxiety, Phobias, Bipolar Affective Disorder, Schizophrenia, Delusional Disorder, Addictions and Psychotic Disorders.

Specifically I offer assessment and treatment of suspected or established cognitive impairment and dementia (including younger onset Dementia in people under the age of 65) as well as Delirium.

I can help to design individualised risk reduction plans in Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI), Pre-dementia and Dementia, including a focus on Active Ageing, Reducing Dementia risk factors and boosting Cognitive Resilience.

I am a Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, and I am on the General Medical Council's Specialist Register as an Old Age Psychiatrist. However, I am also experienced in assessing and treating working age people with suspected or established mental health difficulties.

I have significant experience in the use of the Mental Health Act (2007) and the Mental Capacity Act (2005) and I welcome referrals from solicitors for capacity assessments e.g. Lasting Powers of Attorney, Testamentary Capacity and Court of Protection assessments.

I have been working at health policy level towards transforming the provision of dementia care in the UK and Europe since 2007, including positively influencing cultural and societal perceptions of dementia.

I set up a multi-award winning community team for younger onset dementia in Coventry, and chaired the Midlands regional younger person with dementia forum. I founded a dementia awareness in schools intergenerational online module in the West Midlands, which contributed to the national schools intergenerational learning project linked to the Prime Minister’s Challenge on Dementia, and I was fortunate to collaborate with the Department of Health, the Alzheimer's Society and Angela Rippon to evaluate and subsequently implement our findings nationally.

I served as West Midlands clinical lead for Dementia and Department of Health clinical representative at the European Commission’s Governmental Experts Group on Dementia. I was formerly an executive board member and UK chair of the ALzheimer COoperative Valuation in Europe (ALCOVE) joint action, which produced good practice recommendations for Europe, including Timely Accurate Dementia Diagnosis and safe prescribing.

Formerly a member of the Mental Psychological and Occupational Health (MPOH) panel in London, prioritising national research within the Health Technology Assessment (HTA) programme, and an honorary member of the National Institute of health Research (NIHR) faculty; I published numerous peer-reviewed publications including an international textbook chapter. I am also an examiner and clinical teacher at Warwick Medical School and a former member of the Clinical Leaders Network (CLN).
