I am Professor of Clinical Neurology and Honorary Consultant Neurologist at UCL Institute of Neurology, Queen Square, and the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery (NHNN), University College Hospitals (UCH) NHS Foundation Trust. I have over a decade of consultant experience in diagnosing and treating acute stroke, transient ischaemic attack, as well as other neurological conditions that can look like them, such as migraine, seizures, etc. I run specialist outpatient clinics and attend the hyperacute and acute stroke units within the comprehensive specialist stroke service at University College Hospital and The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square. I also lead a research group specialising in disease of the small arteries of the brain that can cause brain haemorrhage and cognitive problems. I am Head of the Department of Brain Repair and Rehabilitation at UCL Institute of Neurology, and am stroke speciality lead for the National Institute of Health Research Clinical Research Network: North Thames. I contribute to national and international education and clinical guidelines, and regularly lecture at national and international conferences. I have published numerous research articles and have also contributed to several textbooks.

Prof Werring is leading a research program into stroke, with a particular interest in neuroimaging and small vessel disease, especially intracerebral haemorrhage and cerebral amyloid angiopathy. He is Chief Investigator for: the CROMIS-2 (Clinical Relevance of Microbleeds in Stroke) study (www.ucl.ac.uk/cromis-2); for studies of blood pressure lowering after brain haemorrhage (PROHIBIT-ICH); new biomarkers for cerebral amyloid angiopathy (BOCAA); and for a large randomised controlled trial of early anticoagulation after stroke due to atrial fibrillation (OPTIMAS).
He is Chair-Elect of the UK Stroke Forum, Stroke specialty clinical lead for the NIHR North Thames Clinical Research Network and a Fellow of the European Stroke Organization. He is chair of the European Stroke Organization Education Committee, member of the British Association of Stroke Physicians Scientific Committee and the UK Stroke Forum Scientific Committee. Professor Werring also serves on national and international guideline committees in the field of stroke.
Prof Werring has published well over 200 publications, many in the field of cerebrovascular disease, and has contributed to numerous book chapters.
