As a consultant histopathologist I have no direct patient contact. My job is to process and examine under a microscope tumours and other diseased tissues removed at surgery in order to give a diagnosis, classification and staging of the tumour. This enables the cascade of therapies available to follow an optimal pathway for patients, ensuring the best outcome.
My feedback is from my referring medical colleagues and from an endless process of EQA, peer review, audits, reading, attendance at scientific meetings, appraisals and continuing professional development that I must do to keep up to date.
