- Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)
As a Counselling Psychologist I use therapy to help people with difficulties bring about change for the better.
I specialise in treating trauma, anxieties and depression and I can help people manage life events, such as bereavement and stress; relationship difficulties both past and present.
As a Counselling Psychologist I can help both individuals and families alike.
Often the thought of seeing a psychologist is a frightening idea. However, I would like to think of myself as an approachable person, who is compassionate and non-judgemental, open- minded and has a good understanding of how distressing your difficulties are.
Emotional difficulties are very, very common, yet few seek treatment because of the stigma or fear of what will happen. I would like to reassure you that if you seek therapy, you dictate what we say and do and anything you say will be treated in the strictest of confidence.
Therapy is based on talking together, setting goals and deciding how to bring about a change for the better. I liken my role as a Counselling Psychologist to that of a Guide leading you towards your goal.
The conditions I have treat include: -
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder / Trauma – This could be a one off incident such as a road traffic accident, attack or any incident that led you to fear for your life. This led you to you feeling jumpy, irritable and having intrusive or upsetting memories of the event. A trauma is defined as a history of bullying, sexual or physical abuse.
Depression – Feeling low or sad, reduced activity, low on energy, feeling hopeless and increased irritability.
Social Anxiety / social phobia / shyness – often is described as anxious sensations such as blushing, sweating, a racing heart when in social situations. Thoughts are often around “I won’t have anything to say”; “They’ll think I’m stupid”. Often you will avoid social situations for fear of this anxiety.
Panic Attacks – Come on suddenly and can feel very uncomfortable, with among other things heart pounding, feeling light headed and feeling short of breath. It is accompanied by a feeling of fear or anxiety
Obsessional Compulsive Disorder – usually includes obsessive thoughts with a compulsion to do something in response to this. For example a common example is recurring obsessive thoughts about germs and dirt, with a compulsion to wash your hands repeatedly to "clean off the germs".
Health Anxiety -is obsessive worrying about your health, usually to the point where it causes you great distress and affects your ability to function properly.
