About me

I am Consultant Physician at Plymouth Nuffield Hospital and at Plymouth University Hospitals NHS Trust, and Professor of Endocrinology and Diabetes in the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry of the Peninsula Medicla School.

I qualified in Medicine from the University of London in 1985 and I undertook general medical training in London. I have been a member of the Royal College of Physicians since 1998, and a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians since 2003. I was Clinical Lecturer in Medicine from 1992 to 1995 at University College London Medical School and was awarded the doctoral degree of MD in 1997. I held the position of Lecturer in Endocrinology and Diabetes at the University of Bristol and United Bristol Hospitals Trust from 1995 to 1998, and I was Wellcome Visiting Fellow at Pennington Research Centre, Louisiana State University.

In 2001 I was appointed Consultant Physician at University Hospital Aintree NHS Trust and Senior Lecturer in Endocrinology and Diabetes at the University of Liverpool. In 2005 I was appointed Consultant Senior Lecturer at the Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry and Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust. In 2010 I took up the post of Professor of Endocrinology and Diabetes in Plymouth.

I am a practicing physician in the NHS and a researcher and clinical teacher in the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at the Peninsula Medical School in Plymouth.

I am registered with the GMC as a specialist in the medical fields of Endocrinology and Diabetes. My current NHS responsibilities include general adult endocrinology and diabetes, and reproductive endocrinology. I also have many years of interest and experience in the subspecialty field of weight management and obesity, and provide consultant medical input for the Plymouth and West Devon weight management service.

I am a member of the Endocrine Society and a committee members of the Pituitary Foundation.

I have 15 years of experience in medicolegal advisory and expert witness work. I have completed the Cardiff University law School Bond Solon (CUBS) expert witness training course. I have experience in preparing reports for negligence claims (both prosecution and defence). Areas of interest span endocrinology and diabetes, complications of diabetes, hypoglycaemia and driving, obesity and weight management, general internal medicine and life expectancy.
