About me

I am Consultant Gastroenterologist in Hull & East Yorkshire since 2004, having returned to the UK after training in Europe and US and first appointed as a Consultant and Senior Lecturer in Trinity College Dublin. I have particular interest in Inflammatory Bowel Disease and is a nationally and internationally recognised expert in Colitis & Crohns disease and is the service lead for the IBD service in the HEY NHS Trust. I am also an official of the European Colitis and Crohns organisation and is involved in developing best practice guidelines with experts from all over the world in various aspects in diagnosis and treatment of colitis and Crohns disease. For example I am one of the authors for ECCO Crohns disease treatment guidleines, ECCO IBD Endoscopy Guidlines and ECCO Consensus on Pregancy and Reproduction in IBD. I have a national and international reputation in the field of IBD and run a number of national and international multicentre studies looking at aspects of causes of IBD, and newer treatments. I am also one of the founder members and co-chair of the Yorkshire & Humber IBD Network. I have extensive experience in managing complex crohns disease and ulcerative colitis including latest advances in therapy and recieve tertiary referrals for these. I am a nationally recognised expert in care of adolescents and young adults with IBD and secretary of adolescent and young persons section of British society of Gastroenterology. I run a well recognised transition service for this group of patients. I believe in individualised and personalised care to IBD patients in collaboration with my nursing, dietetic and surgical coalgues along with support from clinical psychology and pain management teams.
In addition to Inflammatory bowel disease , I also look after patients with other general gastroenterology problems such as indigestion, barretts, coeliac disease, irritable bowel syndrome, anaemia and malabsorption
