Mr Friesem was born in Michigan USA and then moved to Israel where he completed his secondary school education. He was then drafted into the army and became an officer in the artillery, eventually commanding a scout group. After discharge he began studying medicine in what was then a new medical school in the southern area of Israel before moving to Addenbrookes Hospital in Cambridge.
In 2002 Mr Friesem was appointed as a Consultant Spinal Surgeon at the University Hospital of North Tees. In 2006 he became Clinical Director of Trauma and Orthopaedics at North Tees and Hartlepool, leading the Trust with the re-configuration of trauma and elective whilst continuing his research in spinal surgery.

Mr Friesem is one of the pioneer members of the Spine Arthroplasty Society, working in Spinal Arthroplasty and helping to develop the Maverick Total Disc Replacement for the Lumbar Spine. He is also world renown for his work in Cervical Disc Replacements as an alternative to fusion and Dynamic Stabilisation of the Lumbar Spine
