About me
Mr David Redfern graduated from The University Of London in 1993 and continued his postgraduate training in London and Cambridge including a position teaching anatomy at Cambridge University. He later completed specialist fellowships at John Hopkins University in Baltimore, USA and the Avon Orthopaedic Unit, Bristol,UK.
In 2004, Mr Redfern was appointed Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals where he ran a specialist foot and ankle service before becoming fully independent since 2012 after nearly 20 years in the NHS.
He has extensive experience in the treatment of all foot & ankle disorders, including trauma and sports injuries.
He has a particular interest in minimally invasive surgical techniques including arthroscopic surgery and percutaneous / "keyhole" surgery.
Mr Redfern invented the MICA technique for minimally invasive bunion correction and continues to train surgeons in this and other pioneering minimally invasive techniques worldwide including the USA.
Mr Redfern has sat on councils of both the British Foot & Ankle Society and the European Foot & Ankle Society where he also chaired the Scientific Committee 2011-2016.
In 2019 he was awarded the European Medicine Award for Orthopaedic Surgery for his innovative techniques and contribution to his field and has also been awarded lifetime honorary membership of the German National Foot & Ankle Society (DAF) in recognition of his achievements.
He has published internationally on foot and ankle surgery and sits on the international reviewer panel for several major journals. He continues to share his experience lecturing and teaching worldwide.
Mr Redfern has carried out many thousands of minimally invasive surgeries and remains committed to his clinical practice looking after patients here in the UK, based in London and Sussex.
