About me

Mr Chan is a Consultant Urological Surgeon working at The BMI Duchy Harrogate Hospital and The Nuffield Health York Hospital on a private basis as well as providing a NHS service as part of a team of Urologists at The York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

He has been trained to provide not only a comprehensive service in general urology (both benign and cancerous diseases of the kidneys, bladder, prostate and external genitalia, male family planning (vasectomy and vasectomy reversals) as well as paediatric urology) but also an up to date sub-specialty in Endourology dealing mainly with renal tract stones. Since being at York his surgical practice has been and still is quite innovative to North Yorkshire and he has introduced many new procedures and techniques like flexible nephroureteroscopy since practising in the region.

With regard to renal stones he also uses The Holmium laser system which works by obliterating the kidney stones, breaking them into very small pieces so that they can then be passed naturally. The most important thing is that this does not involve any conventional ‘scalpel’ or ‘open’ surgery. This means that once your stone has been completely treated telescopically, you will recover much more quickly and return to your normal daily routine earlier. In fact, a lot of Mr Chan’s patients who undergo these operations do not need to stay overnight and can return to work after only a few days.

One of the private hospitals (The Nuffield Health York Hospital) has recognised his expertise by being the first private hospital in Yorkshire (if not North of England) to have a permanent onsite Holmium laser system. This is now the gold standard energy source in the management (treatment) of renal stone disease. Therefore he can now offer the same comprehensive high quality endourological service quickly to patients in the private sector or at their convenience.

In recognition of Mr Chan’s specialist skills and practices in urology The BMI had offered him private practice privileges to join The Duchy Harrogate Hospital and he has now kindly accepted the invitation. He can now offer his urological expertise to the patients (including NHS referrals via the choose and book system) in Harrogate and the surrounding communities by making an appointment to see him at The Duchy.
