Overview

About me

For the last 8 years I hold a substantive NHS Consultant Post in General Adult Psychiatry in North East London Foundation NHS Trust. I worked initially as a year long Locum Consultant Psychiatrist at Central and North West London NHS Trust and then commenced my current post in September 2003 where I am responsible for the assessment, diagnosis, management and treatment of all mental health disorders of adults of working age 18-65, including depression, anxiety disorders, personality disorders as well major psychotic disorders such as manic depressive illness and schizophrenia. I also regularly teach medical students from the University of St Mathews and psychiatric trainees from the University College Hospital rotation. I am fully up-to-date with continuing professional development (CPD) and undergo annual appraisals by North East London Foundation Trust of which all have been successful.

Qualifications and training

Dr Papanastassiou is qualified in Medicine from the University of Thessaloniki, Greece and then trained in psychiatry both in inner London and outer London hospitals on the Charing Cross core psychiatric training scheme (1994-1998) and the St Mary's higher psychiatric training scheme (1999-2002), with no breaks in service. I have been a member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists London (MRCPsych) since 1998. I am certified on the Specialist Register, having completed the Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training in General Adult Psychiatry (CCST), awarded by the Specialist Training Authority of the Royal Medical Colleges.

Psychotherapy experience

I have had extensive psychotherapy experience mainly in the psychoanalytic domain having taken on numerous psychotherapy patients for both assessments and individual and group psychotherapy over the last 15 years.

General Medico legal Experience

I have had 15 years of court report writing and court attendance experience. I have worked in forensic settings (Three Bridges Medium Secure Unit Ealing, Ealing Low secure Unit and West London Forensic Psychiatric outpatients ) both as a junior doctor and a specialist registrar. I have regularly attended Bond Solon conferences to update skills for medico legal report writing and remain up-to-date with forensic mental health issues through my NHS work and monthly liaison with Consultant Forensic Psychiatrists. My areas of expertise are:

Custody of children (for example I can provide an opinion of a parent’s mental health issues and diagnosis, the potential risks posing to the child and recommendations for future treatment and supervision of the parent when in custody of the child).

Criminal cases (for example whether a criminal offence is linked to mental illness and commenting on the risk of reoffending and recommendations for court disposal).

Personal injury (especially in relation to acute stress reactions, posttraumatic stress disorders and depressive and anxiety disorders following road traffic or other accidents or untoward incidents as a result of mismanagement of a medical condition).
