About me

My interest in spinal surgery started with research in the early 1990s resulting in an MD thesis in 2005. After my Orthopaedic training, including Spinal Fellowships in Nottingham, Brisbane and Las Vegas, I was appointed as a Consultant Spinal Surgeon in 2003. My practice has always been 100% spinal surgery in both adults and children. I have become increasingly involved in the political aspects of spinal surgery and now Chair the Committee responsible to give clinical advice on spinal services to NHS England. I am also Clinical Lead for the NHS England Improving Spinal Care Project and the spinal advisor to the Orthopaedic Expert Working Group, Clinical Lead for Regional Spinal Networks and on the Executive Committee of the British Scoliosis Society and UK Spinal Societies Board. In my spare time I co-developed the British Spine Registry which allows Surgeons to collect information about procedures performed, complications and patient reported outcome and experience measure. I am now clinical lead for the British Orthopaedic Association project to bring together a number of new Orthopaedic Registries.
