Professor Qasim Aziz was appointed as Professor of Neurogastroenterology at Barts and The London in December 2006 and is the director of the Wingate Institute of Neurogastroenterology. Trained as a gastroenterologist in Manchester and was appointed Professor of Gastroenterology at University of Manchester in 2004.
His main research interest is to study the mechanisms of visceral pain in health and disease. His work has contributed to the current understanding of the brain neural networks involved in processing human gut sensation and to the understanding of mechanisms of visceral hypersensitivity in health and disease. His current research interests include the study of gastrointestinal symptoms and management in patients with Joint Hypermobility Syndrome.
He has held the MRC Career Establishment Award and previously was an MRC Clinician Scientist. He was awarded the Sir Francis Avery Jones Research Gold Medal by the British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG) in 1998 and the Janssen Award for Basic and Clinical Research by the American Gastroenterology Association in 2000. Until recently he was a member of the executive committee of the European Society of Neurogastroenterology and also a member of the education committee of the United European Gastroenterology Federation.
