About me

I was appointed as a Consultant Ear, Nose & Throat – Head & Neck Surgeon at Guy’s & St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Hospital in January 2002. The head & neck unit at Guy’s & St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Hospital is one of the largest in the United Kingdom.
My specialist area of expertise is Head & Neck Oncology, in particular I specialise in oral cavity, thyroid and salivary gland cancer surgery. I receive tertiary referrals from across London and the South East of England for my recognised surgical expertise.
Other surgeons send me complex cases for me to operate on.
I also have an interest in salvage surgery following failed radiotherapy treatment.
I have a strong research commitment having published over 50 publications and have been an invited expert speaker to several national and international scientific meetings. I am a principal investigator on two phase 1 translational research trials and one phase 3 clinical trial in head and neck cancer.
Since my appointment I have taken on several senior managerial posts within the Trust including Clinical Lead for the head & neck cancer unit form 2007 to 2011. During this time I was responsible for the centralisation of all head and neck cancer surgery into Guy’s Hospital from across the South East London Cancer Network.
In 2009 the hospital was subject to the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) Peer Review Process and my clinical leadership was highlighted as ‘exemplar’.
I was Chairman of the South East London Cancer Network Head & Neck Tumour Working Group 2008-2010.
In addition I was Chairman of the of the Head & Neck Multidisciplinary Team meeting 2006-2009).
I have a keen interest in training and set up a post CCT Advanced Head and Neck training Fellowship programme at Guy’s in 2006. This has trained several head & neck surgeons from all over the world who have gone onto take up Consultant posts in cities such as Barcelona, Sydney and Brisbane. In recognition of our training expertise we were recently awarded a National Interface Head & Neck training fellowship post by the Joint Committee of Higher Surgical Training.
I am a past member of the Court of Examiners for the Royal College of Surgeons of England and am an examiner for the FRCS Otolaryngology intercollegiate speciality examination.
