I studied for my medical degree at Cambridge and Oxford Universities, achieving first class honours in my medical sciences degree. My ENT specialist training was in the South West of the UK, based around the Bristol area.
During my specialist training I also travelled overseas for dedicated speciality fellowships, working in Toronto, Canada and Darwin, Northern Australia.
I cover a comprehensive range of general ENT referrals including adult and children’s ear problems, nasal and sinus conditions, throat and voice problems.
I have a subspecialist interest in the management of all types of ear problems; including chronic ear disease needing surgery, and associated ear/balance problems such as dizziness, tinnitus, Meniere’s disease and hearing problems.
I also run dedicated voice clinics and have a medico-legal practice with particular experience as an expert witness in the area of noise-induced hearing loss.
Society membership includes the British Association of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery, the British Society of Otology, the British Rhinological Society, the British Voice Association and the South West Laryngological Association. I contribute audit data to the National Otology audit database.
I hold an academic appointment as the Clinical sub-dean for Exeter University Medical school and am an examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons final ENT examinations. In 2016 I set up a Masters course in Extreme Medicine at the University of Exeter; equipping people with the knowledge and skills to work in remote and hostile environments away from conventional medical facilities, and continue to supervise the course as Programme Lead.
For the past 7 years I have travelled to Nepal on a regular basis to take part in ear surgery charity camps run by a UK based charity, BRINOS (Britain Nepal Otology Service). During a 10 day stay we typically perform 140-150 major ear operations for patients who may travel several hours from surrounding areas to attend the camp.
I have an active research profile. I am an author on several clinical reviews in the Cochrane Database of Systematic reviews and regularly peer-review journal articles for the British Medical Journal and Annals of College of Surgeons, as well as ongoing research into the epidemiology of Meniere’s disease and vocal fold dysfunction in patients with severe asthma.
