Dr Jose Thomas is a specialist in Respiratory Medicine and an Accredited Expert in Sleep Medicine and Sleep Technology. He is a consultant in Respiratory and Sleep Medicine at the Aneurin Bevan University Health Board. He is the clinical lead for Sleep Medicine at the Aneurin Bevan Sleep Centre.
Dr Thomas trained in Respiratory Medicine in South Wales and was appointed as Consultant Physician in 1995. He was accredited as “SOMNOLOGIST- expert in sleep medicine” by the European Sleep Research Society (ESRS). He trained in advanced sleep technology at two centres in the United States and established the advanced sleep laboratory at Nevill Hall Hospital. He was accredited as a Registered Polysomnography Technologist by the Board of Registered Polysomnography Technologists (BRPT) and subsequently gained the RST (Registered Sleep Technologist) certification offered by the American Board of Sleep Medicine.
He has interests in various sub-specialities of Respiratory Medicine, particularly asthma and respiratory allergies, interstitial lung diseases and laboratory evaluation of lung function including cardiopulmonary exercise tests (CPET or CPEX). He provides the CPET service for the Aneurin Bevan Health Board. He established a comprehensive pleural disease service at Nevill Hall Hospital in 2005 , complete with medical thoracoscopy, ward-based thoracic ultrasound and a Tunnelled Pleural Cathether service, the first of its kind in Wales.
Dr. Thomas is experienced in the diagnosis and management of the full range of sleep disorders. He had led the sleep apnoea service at Nevill Hall Hospital since 2003 and currently runs dedicated clinics for the full sprectrum of sleep disorders including a neurological sleep disorders (“neuro-sleep” clinic) as well as sleep apnoea and complex sleep-related breathing disorders.
