About me

Mr Marc Laniado is a consultant urologist specialising in the diagnosis and treatment of men with prostate enlargement (BPH) and cancer. His aim is to return men to a normal life quickly with the least side effects. Being a consultant since 2002 in the full-time direct clinical care of patients, without other distractions, he has great experience and expertise in the treatment for urinary symptoms due to the prostate (BPH) and prostate cancer. Marc Laniado offers an individualised approach for each man with either prostate enlargement or prostate cancer, tailoring the tests or treatments to the specific values of the man he sees.

For men with urinary symptoms due to BPH, Marc Laniado advises men on lifestyle changes and medications. Where these are unsuccessful, he performs day-case procedures that alleviate urinary symptoms without affecting ejaculation (UroLift and Rezzum). Some men have unsuitable prostates and need either a HoLEP (Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate). These are performed as day-case sometimes or overnight stay. To preserve normal ejaculation in selected men, Marc Laniado has modified the procedure successfully.

For men who need therapy for prostate cancer, Marc Laniado offers:

- Prolaris: a special way of analysing prostate biopsies that better determines if cancer is very low-risk and defer treatment
- Focal therapy with HIFU when appropriate, as it preserves bladder control and erections. If the cancer is unsuitable, he offers either brachytherapy in conjunction with Dr Paul Rogers at the Royal Berkshire Hospital.
- Retzius-sparing prostatectomy (100 cases per year) with full functional urethral length preservation and NeuroSAFE. The combination is the best surgical technique for the preservation of urinary continence, cancer control and allows more nerve-sparing to be done safely.

He trained in open prostatectomy, started laparoscopic prostatectomies in 2006 and moved onto robotic prostatectomies in 2008/9. He operates regularly (100 cases per year) at the Wellington Hospital for private patients and the Royal Berkshire Hospital for NHS patients, where he represents the East Berkshire part of the robotic prostatectomy team.

Marc Laniado is the prostate cancer lead at Wexham Park Hospital (Frimley Health), where he has driven the development of multiparametric MRI and MRI-targeted fusion biopsies of the prostate to diagnose men accurately. He started MRI-targeted biopsies in 2012 and does over two hundred MRI-targeted fusion biopsies a year. He introduced Retzius sparing prostatectomy at the end of 2016 as his preserved surgical technique. He is the primary investigator at Wexham Park for several prostate cancer clinical trials.

By continually increasing his knowledge and awareness of developments in surgical treatments for urological conditions, he brings his expertise and experience to the patient by introducing them into his regular practice, ensuring that patients receive the very best care.

After having graduated from Guy's and St Thomas' medical school, Mr Laniado studied on urological training schemes in London and spent a period at the Cleveland Clinic. He has since gained further recognition and awarded further qualifications and an award from The British Urological Foundation Fellowship, Gilbert Bursary and other awards
