Following full registration, he undertook his basic surgical training in the London region and obtained his Fellowships of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. He subsequently undertook his specialist orthopaedic training between 1994 and 2000 on the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital (RNOH) Training Programme where he was awarded the prestigious Johnson and Johnson Arthroplasty Fellowship. Upon completion of his training he undertook a specialist knee and sports trauma fellowship in New Zealand & Australia in 1999.

Mr Kumar took up his post as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with an interest in knee surgery at Barking, Havering and Redbridge NHS Trust in 2000 and was Clinical Director for the Musculoskeletal Service between 2010 and 2012.
