Mr Ackroyd is a Consultant General Surgeon at the Northern General Hospital, with a busy private practice at Claremont Private Hospital. He specialises in general, upper gastrointestinal and obesity (bariatric/weight loss) surgery.
Mr Ackroyd trained in obesity surgery in Sheffield and Adelaide together with visits to various European centres in Brussels, Lyon and Gothenburg to learn new techniques. He is currently President elect of the British Obesity and Metabolic Surgery Society (BOMSS) and sits on various NHS advisory groups.
Mr Ackroyd's surgical practice offers a full range of weight loss procedures including laparoscopic gastric banding, laparoscopic gastric bypass, laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy and complex revisional surgery. He also offers intragastric balloon insertion in some cases. He has one of the busiest bariatric practices in the country, having treated over 3500 obesity patients.
Alongside obesity surgery, Mr Ackroyd sees patients for general and gastrointestinal surgical problems including oesophagogastric cancer, reflux disease, gallstones and hernias. His research interests include ablation therapy for Barrett's oesophagus and oesophageal cancer, clinical trials comparing different types of anti-reflux surgery and the metabolic effects of obesity surgery.

I perform all types of hernia repair, laparoscopic cholecystectomy and laparoscopic fundoplication. I perform all obesity operations including laparoscopic gastric banding, laparoscopic gastric bypass, laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, intra-gastric balloon insertion and revisonal surgery.

I have an active research programme. I obtained my MD thesis with Distinction in 1998 for work into the use of photodynamic therapy (PDT) in the ablation of Barrett's oesophagus. I have attracted around £750000 in research funding and have over 100 peer reviewed publications. I have supervised a number of research student for higher degrees (MD, PhD, MSc, etc)
