I have been a Consultant Rheumatologist and Sport & Exercise Medicine Physician since 1999. I work full time in the NHS at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital (Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust), with a private practice at Claremont Hospital.
My interest in sport and exercise medicine (SEM) dates back to medical school and reflects my own enjoyment in sport. After qualifying in 1989, I opted for conventional rheumatology training on the basis that rheumatology was a speciality that would allow me to develop my SEM interests. As a registrar, I started working in professional sport, completed my Masters degree at Nottingham University and gaining additional clinical experience in both Nottingham and Leicester.
I was appointed to my current NHS post in 1999.
In addition to establishing Sheffield’s sport & exercise medicine service in 1999, I have worked at several international multisport games including London 2012. I have been Chief Medical Officer for British University Sport and have worked in several professional sports including 5 years with the ECB providing medical services to the England cricket team. I have also been an English Institute of Sport (EIS) Medical Officer 2003 - 2015. I continue to maintain a busy NHS rheumatology and sport & exercise medicine practice.
I have contributed to the wider development of Sport & Exercise Medicine through work with the British Association of Sport and Exercise Medicine (BASEM) and the Faculty of Sport and Exercise Medicine (FSEM). This has included contributing to achieving recognition for SEM as a specialty in 2005 and subsequently establishing Yorkshire & Humber's training scheme, which has now seen 6 trainees become consultants.

Unfortunately due to the C-19 pandemic I am currently unable to see new or FU patients in clinic as Claremont Hospital is being utilised to support NHS care. As soon as C-19 restrictions allow I will update and re-establish my clinical service.
