About me

Dr Aruna Arujuna is a Cardiac Electrophysiologist and Devices Specialist at The Lanchashire Cardiac Centre (LCC).His areas of interest include an integrated approach in managing Heart Rhythm Conditions, the management of Atrial Fibrillation, the role of Imaging in Electrophysiology and Advanced Pacing.

At Bristol Medical School, Dr Arujuna took an interest in Cardiovascular Medicine obtaining Merits in the Molecular and Cellular Basis of Medicine and Cardiovascular Medicine. During his electives, Dr Arujuna managed to get into the University of Washington's I-Lab under Professor Steve Schwartz. Artherosclerotic plaque classification and identification of fibrous cap thickness measurements for one of the research associates was part of the brief remit over there. Following completion of Medical School, Dr Arujuna undertook his initial junior doctor training in Exeter at the Royal Devon & Exeter NHS Foundation Trust. Here he rotated through the various specialities on a Golden Rotation at one site. He gained membership into the Royal College of Physicians and moved to London to seek a research post specifically looking into Cardiac MRI and Electrophysiology.

King's College London was setting up the Biomedical Engineering and Imaging Sciences Division and an opening arose in this research field. Dr Arujuna worked alongside MRI physicists, software architects, scientists, clinical cardiologists and electrophysiologists on a number of projects including Robotic Catheter Ablation , Artificial Intelligence in a Decision Support Tool in CMR analysis, and Echo-Fluoro Overlay Hybrid Imaging. This proved to be a rewarding time with a number of abstract presentations, manuscripts and a network of people both Nationally and Internationally gained.

Dr Arujuna's EP and Cardiology training began at Guy’s & St Thomas’ during the clinical research period and continued in the West Midlands with more procedural exposure and further enhanced during his observerships in Leipzig and Lisbon. To further expolre his interest within the Autonomic Nervous System and Arrhythmias, he visited the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA).

Throughout his journey, Dr Arujuna has maintained good links with the relevant technology developments. He is versatile with Abbott's Precision , Biosense Webster's Carto , and Boston Scientific's Rhythm Mapping tools. He uses Medtronic's Cryo Ablation catheters. Dr Arujuna has a keen interest in continuing his interests that arose during his research period, namely image guided ablation. The combination of multi-modality imaging pre and during a case with tools like Intra-Cardiac Echo (ICE) when indicated does augment procedures. Similarly working with the Autonomic Nervous System and regulating once Lifestyle through Diet Exercise and Mindful Body Postures is an interest he enjoys discussing.

Outside the Clinical Corridors, Dr Aruna Arujuna is a Fellow of both the European Society of Cardiology (FESC) and American College of Cardiology (FACC) and sits on the Committee Member Board for Heart Rhythm Society (US) 2021-2022 and is an External Committee Member for the Air Pollution Sub-Committee Group , World Heart Federation 2021-2022.
