I trained in Bristol, Cardiff, Cape Town and Cambridge, before being appointed as a Consultant in Plymouth in 2002. I have been fortunate to work for and be trained by some of the national and world leaders in nutrition, inflammatory bowel disease and irritable bowel syndrome. I have an interest in infectious diseases, having trained in specialist units in Cardiff and at the Hospital for Tropical Diseases in London. I have worked for medical charities in W Africa.
I am sympathetic and a good communicator. I receive excellent patient feedback and continually audit my endoscopy skills achieving a high standard.

I am a Consultant Gastroenterologist and General (Internal) Physician at Derriford Hospital, Plymouth. I lead the hospital's nutrition team and lead for the Gastroenterology department.
I am also an Honorary Professor at the Peninsular Medical School.
I lead the GI research programme at Derriford Hospital. My interests are within the field of nutrition, infections and anaemia. I have published 58 pier reviewed scientific papers in medical journals. Two studies have won prizes this year at international conferences. I am a member on the NHIR Biomedical Research unit based in Bristol. Perhaps my most quoted publication (in over 1500 publications) is for the Bristol Stool Form Scale ! (Lewis & Heaton. Scandinavian Journal of Gastroenterology 1997: 32; 920-924).
I am a keen scuba diver, cyclist and horse rider.
I have just stepped down as chair of the British Society of parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (medical) and am chair of the British Society of Gastroenterology's Nutrition committee.
I am actively involved with NICE, in the creation of nutrition related guidelines. I am also responsible for Cochrane reviews on early post-operation nutrition, immune enhancing nutrition and chewing gum.
