I qualified in Medicine at University College London Hospitals. After further training and finishing my PhD at Guy’s Hospital I completed my rheumatology training in Oxford. I have been an NHS Consultant Rheumatologist for over 15 years at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham.
I have a broad base of experience and interest in general rheumatology, with a particular interest in inflammatory arthritis, (such as rheumatoid arthritis and seronegative arthritis such as psoriatic arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis) and connective tissue disease (such as systemic lupus erythematosos (SLE), Sjogren's syndrome and sclerodarma). I am an Honorary Professor at the University of Birmingham.
I have had an interest in postgraduate training as Chair of the British Society for Rheumatology Education and Training Committee. I have an active research interest in Sjogren’s Syndrome and I am a past President of the British Society for Rheumatology.

Professor Bowman has been Chair of the Education and Training Committee and President and a Trustee of the British Society for Rheumatology (President 2014-2016) and Lead Clinician for the Royal College of Physicians Specialty Certificate Examination in Rheumatology.
