- Head & neck oncology
I was appointed as a Maxillofacial Surgeon to the Dudley Group of Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in 1993 following undergraduate training in both Dentistry and Medicine in London and subsequent post graduate surgical training in London and on the South Coast.
As a Maxillofacial Surgeon within the Trust I undertake a broad range of maxillofacial surgical procedures with areas of special interest including salivary gland surgery and head and neck oncology including microvascular reconstructive surgery. I am also a trainer for the west Midlands surgical training rotation.
My surgical practice to the private sector is broardly comparable to my NHS practice.
In part because of my clinical experience as a head & neck cancer surgeon I felt it was both appropriate and an extension of my clinical role to apply for the post of Lead Cancer Clinician for the Trust and I was appointed to this post in 2007.
As the Cancer Lead my role is to ensure that Cancer Services are developed within the Trust and organised effectively to support the delivery of high quality care by providing clear effective clinical leadership for the many multidisciplinary specialist team involved in cancer care
The cancer team not only work closely with the clinical units tasked with delivering the care but is also highly integrated into the Trust’s operational structure to ensure that Cancer services are represented at all levels of both the trusts operational management and strategic planning.
As lead clinician it is also my duty to represent DGoH within the framework of the GMCN and to that end I sit on the GMCN board.
As new targets for the delivery of cancer care are introduced nationally it is the responsibility of the Cancer Management Team to ensure that these targets are achieved.
