Mr Flanagan studied Medicine at Liverpool Medical School, qualifying in 1986. In 1983 he took a year out of his medical course to complete a BSc in Physiology. After qualification he underwent basic surgical training in Liverpool, Oxford and Manchester, obtaining his General Surgical Fellowship in 1990. He then left the UK and worked in a mission hospital in Zululand, South Africa, as the District Surgeon for 1 year.
He entered a formal Otolaryngology Training Scheme in South Wales in 1993, working mainly in Cardiff and Newport. In 1995 he spent 1 year undertaking nasal physiology research at The Common Cold Centre in Cardiff leading to the award of Master of Philosophy in 1996.
In 1998 Mr Flanagan worked as an Overseas ENT Fellow at Monash Medical Centre and The Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital / Bionic Ear Institute in Melbourne, Australia.
His first consultant appointment was at Manchester Royal Infirmary in 2000, specialising in rhinology and surgical implants for deafness: cochlear implants and bone anchored hearing aids.
In 2003, in search of a more balanced lifestyle, he and his family moved to Cornwall to take up a consultant post at the Royal Cornwall Hospital.
His practice now is General ENT, with specialist interests in Rhinology, Otology and deafness. In the NHS he holds dedicated rhinology and paediatric deafness clinics.
