About me
Personal profile
Having qualified from the University of Manchester in 1986, I have over 25 years of experience in clinical paediatrics, including over 19 years as a Consultant General Paediatrician at the Royal Bolton Hospital. Most recently I spent 12 months as an Honorary Consultant Paediatrician in the department of Allergy & Clinical Immunology at the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital, a tertiary centre for childhood allergy. Previously I have had experience working at the Royal Children’s Hospital, Melbourne, where I worked in Paediatric Neurology, General Paediatrics and Neonatal Intensive Care, including the air transfer of sick newborns. During my postgraduate training in the UK, I had experience in Paediatric Gastroenterology at Booth Hall Children’s Hospital, and spent 18 months working as Senior Registrar at the Supra-Regional Centre for Inherited Metabolic Disease (Willink Unit).
During almost 20 years as a Consultant Paediatrician in Bolton, I had extensive experience in General Paediatrics, including Acute and Critical care Paediatrics and I more recently developed a clinical interest in Paediatric Allergy. I have attended several training courses in Paediatric Allergy, and have excellent working relationships with colleagues in Tertiary Allergy Services at the Royal Manchester Children Hospital. I am able to perform and interpret allergy tests and have experience in managing various forms of allergic disease in childhood, including asthma, eczema, rhinitis and food allergy. I also have a clinical interest in Paediatric & Adolescent Gynaecology, and have some experience in jointly assessing and managing these problems with a consultant gynaecologist. I was a member of the North West and North Wales Paediatric Critical Care Network and was involved in guideline development, including being the lead author on the Convulsive Status Epilepticus Guideline.
I now also work in medical education at the University of Manchester Medical School, mainly in student assessment (year 5) and student health and conduct.
I work part time as a medical case examiner in Fitness to Practise for the General Medical Council.
