Rak has been a Consultant Physician in Genitourinary Medicine in Glasgow since 1997, having previously trained in London.
The specialty of Genitourinary Medicine (GUM) deals with sexually transmitted infections and other conditions which can affect the genital area, including skin disorders. Common reasons for referral including testing for infection, genital warts, skin rashes and recurrent problems such as herpes or vaginal discharge.
Rak is also an experienced clinician providing care and treatment for people living with HIV for over 30 years. He led the introduction of medication to prevent HIV transmission, also known as PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis).
Rak has published a number of scientific papers and book chapters on HIV and sexual health. He also hold research grants including as an investigator of a programme called LUSTRUM which aims to prevent transmission of sexual infections and HIV (£2.5 million grant over 5 years).
