She has significant experience in the field of mental health, with a particular interest in the areas of trauma, LGBT mental health, and neuropsychology. She has worked extensively with both individuals and families in statutory, community and voluntary settings and has conducted research investigating the effectiveness of treatment programmes in reducing reoffending amongst men in secure settings. Her current research aims to understand factors which predict substance use in adolescents.

Masuma has worked with a range of mental health problems across the lifespan and has extensive experience of working with offenders and those who present with a range of complex issues. In 2011 she was awarded the Forensic and Neurodevelopmental Sciences Award for Forensic Mental Health Research at the Institute of Psychiatry. She is Chartered by the British Psychological Society and Registered with the Health and Care Professions Council and has been invited to present her research at a number of international conferences. She has a keen interest in mental health law and the Mental Capacity Act and has been appointed by the Lord Chancellor as Special Medical Visitor to the Court of Protection and the Office of the Public Guardian. Masuma teaches on the University of Surrey Doctorate in Clinical Psychology and has authored academic papers in the areas of developmental trauma and the management of poor sleep quality in mental health services. In addition, she writes about mental health and current affairs for several press publications, including The Guardian, and regularly appears on television.
