I undertook my medical training at Newcastle University and qualified in 2005. I subsequently worked in the Northern Deanery and started my cardiology registrar training in 2009. During my final two years of training, I focused on my chosen subspecialty of Cardiac Electrophysiology and Device Therapy whilst working at James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough and Freeman Hospital in Newcastle upon Tyne. I completed my Cardiology Training in February 2017 and then undertook a Cardiac Electrophysiology Fellowship at John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford for 8 months before starting work as a Locum Consultant Cardiologist and Electrophysiologist at the same institution. I started my substantive Consultant post at Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital in July 2018 and we are currently developing a complex Cardiac Electrophysiology service for patients who live in Norfolk.
My training has provided me with a breadth of experience in all aspects of cardiology and arrhythmia management including standard and complex ablation and device implantation. I gained further practical and clinical experience at John Radcliffe which has allowed me to develop into a high-volume operator.
My interest in cardiac electrophysiology stems from my intercalated Bachelor of Medical Science degree which I undertook in 2002. The main focus of this research was on the utility of surface ECG waveform analysis in assessing the impact of pharmacological and catheter ablation treatments in patients with atrial fibrillation. I subsequently developed this research into an MD project which was funded by the British Heart Foundation as a Clinical Research Training Fellowship and completed in December 2015. This project focused on the role of surface ECG waveform analysis in predicting acute and longer-term clinical outcome following catheter ablation and the impact of catheter ablation on patients’ AF symptoms and quality of life. I have had 11 articles published in peer reviewed journals including seven as first author and have presented abstracts in both poster and oral format at international and national conferences.
