My specialist interests are in the area of anxiety, stress and depression. I work in a practical way supporting my clients to understand patterns (habits) relating to their presentation. By guiding people to reflect on themselves, they ultimately feel empowered to make changes and try something new.
I have worked for years in the field of brain injury rehabilitation and have a keen interest in how the brain processes information (cognition) and how we learn new information (neuroplasticity). My experience of working with brain injury makes me different from CBT therapists, counsellors and other psychologists as it is an extra level of knowledge that I can apply to working with people.
In addition to my private practice I work as a consultant in stress management, welll-being and mental health for businesses and schools. I also work 1 day per week in the NHS in the speciality of health psychology - I have worked with cancer patients, complex long term health conditions (ventilated patients) and during the COVID crisis I am leading the critical care psychology provision in my Health Board.
When I work with clients, I might use psychometric assessment to inform understanding of personality and how this influences how we experience our worlds and relate to other people. I also use other measures of anxiety and depression to track the outcome of the work we do together. This is an important part of therapeutic work.
I am an approachable psychologist and have ensured that I am well trained (holding 2 doctoral level degrees in my field) but don't let this put you off... I'm very humble in my approach to my profession and learn something new every day from the people I meet.
My continuing professional development this year is around medical legal training that I am completing with Bond Solon and Cardiff University.
