About me

I am a Consultant Paediatric Surgeon with a special interest in Paediatric Urology. I qualified from Leeds University in 1983 with a Distinction in Anatomy. After training in General Surgery in Leeds and in London at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School, I became a tutor in Paediatric Surgery at the Leeds General Infirmary. I completed a higher degree for work investigating urothelial cell biology, whilst at the Cancer Research Institute at St James’s University Hospital in Leeds, and was awarded 1st prize for presenting my work at the Urological Research Society in January 1993, London. I completed my Paediatric Surgical training in Leeds and Manchester and undertook a Pediatric Urology Fellowship at the Clark-Morrison Children's Urological Center, Los Angeles, USA in 1996. I was appointed as a Consultant Paediatric Surgeon at the University Hospital of Wales (UHW) Cardiff in 1997 and retired from the NHS on 3 June 2019. During my post at UHW, a tenure of 22 years, I developed services for paediatric urology including urodynamics, neuropathic bladder and renal tract stone disease. There were no paediatric continence nurse specialists in Cardiff when I arrived and I was instrumental in progressing key appointments and developing a team approach to the care of paediatric patients with complex urological needs. I had a close working relationship with colleagues in paediatric nephrology, paediatric radiology, paediatric gastroenterology and paediatric anaesthesia, and this collaboration within a multidisiplinary team I believe led to improved patient outcomes. I continue to pursue academic interests and help strengthen standards of postgraduate education. I have remained, following retirement from the NHS, an examiner for the FRCS Urology exit examinations in Paediatric Urology and the Joint Surgical Colleges Fellowship Examination in Urology (an International exit examination in Urology). I am involved with the Oral Question Writing Group and Standard Setting for the Intercollegiate Specialty Board for the examinations. I am a member of the Commissioning Group for Foreskin Condition, The Royal College of Surgeon of England. I am progressing modern, evidence based treatments of day and nighttime urinary incontinence problems in childhood within a private healthcare setting - for example TENS neuromodulation.
