After graduating from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, Dr Thong had his postgraduate training at the Simpson Memorial Maternity Pavilion, Edinburgh and the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. He was awarded a World Health Organisation (WHO) Research Fellowship at the Edinburgh University’s Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and gained his MD (Doctorate of Medicine) in Reproductive Medicine. He was awarded dual accreditation in Obstetrics & Gynaecology and Subspecialist status in Reproductive Medicine by the Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists. Dr Thong is a referee for fertility and contraception journals and for research grants. In addition, he has been awarded prizes for his research work and has published his research widely in international fertility and contraception journals with a high citation index. Currently, he presents his research work at international conferences.
Dr Thong is currently a Consultant Subspecialist in Reproductive Medicine/Consultant Gynaecologist . He is in charge of the Edinburgh Assisted Conception (IVF) Unit at the RIE and trains Subspecialist trainees in Reproductive Medicine. He is committed to patient care with gynaecological disorders (women with subfertility and endometriosis or fibroids) and focus his clinical skills on investigations and management of female and male Infertility and female hormonal disorders. He is Lead Clinician for female and male Infertility services at the Edinburgh Fertility and Reproductive Endocrine Centre (RIE) , Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis programme and Andrology (male sampling) laboratory for the RIE. As a Consultant Subspecialist in Reproductive Medicine, he is familiar with the management of complex cases in a national referral centre.
Dr Thong has wide clinical interests which includes assessment of ovarian (egg) reserve, female hormonal disorders including polycystic ovary syndrome, gynaecological ultrasound scanning, egg donation treatment, and investigations and management of recurrent miscarriage. In addition, he is a Fellow of the Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare and treats patients with menopausal disorders, premenstrual syndrome and menstrual disorders. Dr Thong is also a member of the American Society of Laparoscopic Surgeons.
