After completing his post-graduate training in general medicine and obtaining MRCP(UK), Dr Viswanathan gained extensive experience in cardiology working across both district general and tertiary care hospitals in Yorkshire over nine years, and completed his specialist cardiology training at the Yorkshire Heart Centre in Leeds in June 2013.
He then worked at the prestigious Toronto General Hospital, UHN, Toronto, Canada, completing a Fellowship in Cardiac Electrophysiology. He returned to the UK in March 2015 and worked as a Consultant Cardiologist in two large tertiary centre teaching hospitals - the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle-upon-Tyne and the Royal Brompton and Harefield hospitals in London.
Since July 2017, Dr Viswanathan works at Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Trust as a Consultant Cardiologist. He manages patients across the spectrum of cardiac illnesses, with three outpatient cardiology NHS clinics every week. He has a particular interest in complex device therapy (pacemakers and defibrillators) and management of patients with arrhythmias.
Dr Viswanathan is currently engaged in the re-design of care pathways for patients with cardiac arrhythmias across Huddersfield and Calderdale, focussing on providing patients rapid access to specialist care through a novel one-stop, multi-professional clinic that he has established both at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary and Calderdale Royal Hospital. He is passionate about encouraging patient choice and participation in decision-making and has been instrumental in the past in setting up Patient support groups to promote patient education.
Dr Viswanathan is also active in designing and delivering education and training for aspiring cardiologists and allied health professionals, both locally and at regional level. Building on his extensive experience in cardiology research (which includes a MD(Res) degree from the University of Leeds), Dr Viswanathan continues to lead as Investigator for clinical research trials in cardiology.
In his spare time, Dr Viswanathan enjoys playing badminton and chess, and last but not the least, making the most of the time with his two young children
