Overview

About me

Hi, my name is Stephanie and I am a Clinical Psychologist and a Yoga Teacher.

I would like to tell you about my values and ways of working as a Psychologist, and how my training as a Yoga Teacher supports my therapeutic work.

My values as a Clinical Psychologist

My approach to therapy is humanistic and holistic, which means putting the individual at the core of understanding their experience whilst acknowledging the social and cultural context and multiple influencing factors in their life. I believe in using a strengths-focused approach, that does not blame the individual for the difficulties experienced and aims to re-write positive alternative stories. I seek to understand an individual's experience from an open and non-judging position, with empathy, sensitivity and kindness.

I have volunteered in Kenya, Bangkok and India and have an interest in mental health, race and culture. I appreciate working with difference and diversity which has been very much informed by accepting diversity across all individual and social factors. Self reflection and reflexivity are important to me and support a positive and mindful therapist-client relationship, which is a strong influence for effective therapy. I am also inspired by psychology applied into social action, such as the work of 'Psychologists Against Austerity' and I support psychology having a voice in the social and political landscape.

Ways of working

I currently work with children, young people and families in a specialist community service in the NHS in East London. This involves therapy in both individual and group settings, working with emotional and behavioural difficulties, attachment & relationship difficulties, gender & sexuality issues, substance misuse, self-harm, loss and bereavement, parenting, refugees and asylum seekers, and looked after children. The clinical work also involves conducting complex cognitive assessments, consulting with education, working collaboratively with social care, and liaising with multiple inter-disciplinary agencies and third sector organisations.

I am clinically trained to work in a multiple therapeutic models, including Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy, Systemic Therapy, Psychodynamic Therapy, Narrative Therapy, Compassion-Focused Therapy, Transactional Analysis and Mindfulness.

Professional membership & Continued Professional Development

I am a member of the British Psychological Society (BPS), the BPS Community Psychology section, and the BPS Division of Clinical Psychology (DCP). I have played an active role within the DCP, including contributing to policy and guidance at pre-training level, writing articles and presenting at conferences. I am also currently pursuing specialist training in Trauma work as well as advanced Narrative Therapy training.

Yoga

As a qualified Yoga Teacher I understand that the process of life experiences can impact the physical body through the holding of tensions and emotional blockages. Clinical psychology and yoga are complimentary and share mutual benefits in their respective practice; the Eastern philosophies of yoga and mindfulness can be reflected through the use of mindfulness in therapeutic sessions.

Aside from psychology and yoga, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, watching documentaries, discovering new music, visiting exhibitions and the adventure of travel.
