About me

I am a general adult psychiatrist with a special interest in the link between physical and emotional health. I graduated from King’s College London with a first-class honours BSc in Neuroscience and an MBBS in Medicine and Surgery with merit. I completed my psychiatric training at the Maudsley and St Thomas’ Hospitals in central London.

After completing my training, I spent a year in America on the prestigious Harkness Fellowship. I was a Visiting Scholar at the ivy league Columbia University in New York City, studying ways to help people with serious mental illnesses receive better care, not just for their mental illness but also their physical health and social problems like housing and employment.

I am now a Consultant Psychiatrist and one of very few specialists in the Psychiatry of Musculoskeletal Disease at the world-renowned Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital. Here I provide care to people who have suffered life-changing events like paralysis or cancers, as well as developing expertise in looking after people with chronic pain and hypermobility syndromes.

I am trained in using talking therapies in my consultations. These can help to identify why someone may be expressing their emotions in certain ways (or in some cases not expressing them) and how past relationships can have an impact on how people behave now. More recently I have begun exploring therapies that borrow a lot from eastern Zen philosophy which can help people accept and get beyond things that may be holding them back.

I am accredited in Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry by the General Medical Council and am experienced in Perinatal Psychiatry - treating women with mental health problems during pregnancy and in the year after birth. I am active in teaching and training other doctors, physiotherapists and other health professionals. I am also actively involved in international research projects such as with the Harvard Global Health Institute and the Columbia University Medical Center. These activities have led to me being appointed a Senior Research Fellow at RAND Europe, a public research organisation with close links to the University of Cambridge.
