About me

Shirine Pezeshgi (“Dr Shirin” ) is an independent practitioner covering the full range
of Child and Adolescent mental health disorders, offering specialist assessment, crisis
management, individual and family therapy.

Special experience includes Forensic Child Psychiatry; medico-legal work; Liaison Paediatrics (mental health problems
arising from physical illness, psychosomatic and Munchausen disorders); young
adults with past history of trauma and consultation-support groups for healthcare
professionals.

She is available to see parents, children and young adults at a variety of locations both
in Kent, East Sussex and in London and is able to advise re appropriate management,
treatments and specialist referrals when appropriate and provide supervision for
therapists, counsellors and support for a wide range of health-workers

Dr. Pezeshgi was formerly appointed as an NHS Consultant Psychiatrist in Maidstone
in 1993 and was soon rescuing services in a state of collapse. She was Lead
Clinician for the Development of West Kent NHS Child & Adolescent Mental Health
Services 1995. She re-established multidisciplinary outpatient and day therapy
services for Sevenoaks, Tunbridge Wells, Maidstone Dartford and Medway Towns
and created a new NHS inpatient adolescent unit at Maidstone.

Shirine trained at Charing Cross Medical School London and gained a BSc in Medical
Sciences with Psychology at UCL (1978). She worked at the Royal Sussex County,
Brighton; the John Radcliffe Oxford and trained in paediatrics at the Westminster and
St Stephen’s Hospitals in London before moving in 1983 to the Maudsley and
Bethlem Royal Hospitals to train in Psychiatry (MRCPsych 1986) and Child and
Adolescent Specialist training (1987-1992). She was awarded full scholarships to
study Social Anthropology at the LSE in 1986 (MSc 1987) and to travel to Boston,
USA as Visiting Fellow at Harvard Medical School in 1990.
She has worked as Mental Health Foundation Research Fellow to Kings College
School of Medicine & Dentistry, Department of General Practice and Primary Care
developing a degree course in Mental Health for the Open University. She also
worked on various ground-breaking OU courses on Child Abuse & Neglect training
for professionals. She was appointed Honorary Senior Lecturer in Medical
Anthropology, Brunel University and developed and taught a MSc module in
Psychiatry and Anthropology.
