About us
Steve Gwilym is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in the management of shoulder and elbow disorders.
Prof Gwilym is a recognised international expert on the topics of shoulder pain and shoulder trauma. He leads a number of research projects in these topics at the University of Oxford, and regularly runs training courses around the world where he teaches other surgeons about his clinical practice.
Steve is the clinical lead at the Major Trauma Centre in Oxford, heading-up a team of specialist surgeons with expertise in the treatment of injuries, ranging from soft tissue injuries to complex trauma.
Prof Gwilym qualified in 2000 with first class honours from University College London; and undertook his postgraduate medical and surgical training in London and Oxford.
He then underwent specialist fellowship training in Shoulder surgery and Trauma, initially in Sydney, Australia and then at centres of excellence around Europe (Switzerland, France and Germany). He was appointed as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in Oxford in 2013.
Prof Gwilym supervises students studying towards higher-degrees in Orthopaedics and is part of a team running a multi-million pound research portfolio. He previously undertook a PhD (DPhil) at the University of Oxford in which he investigated the causes of pain in musculoskeletal disease. He remains an active clinician scientist, conducting clinical trials and basic science research at the University of Oxford.
Having consulted on Harley Street for a number of years, he now exclusively sees patients in his Oxfordshire clinics, offering the highest possible levels of care to local, national and international patients.
When not caring for his patients, his time is largely spent at his local tennis and badminton clubs with his wife and children. He also enjoys cycling and running.
