About me

Current NHS employment

I currently work part-time in North East London Foundation (NHS) Trust as a cognitive behavioural psychotherapist (CBT) and EMDR Therapist in the Long-Term Condition Psychology Service. In addition I work in the private sector and in both areas I offer a sensitive, confidential, non-judgemental and competent psychological treatment drawing on my wide experience from different perspectives in CBT, EMDR and other psychological approaches. This treatment is underpinned by an adherence to the standards of conduct, performance and ethics of British Association of Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies, Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (Europe) and the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

What is CBT ?
CBT is a talking therapy that has been proven to help in a wide range of emotional and physical health condition in adults, young people and children.

Does CBT Work?
There is a great deal of research evidence on CBT that has been carefully reviewed by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) and recommended for the treatment of psychological problems such as the anxiety disorders, depression and bipolar affective disorder. There is also good evidence that CBT works effectively in the treatment of sleeping difficulties, chronic pain and chronic fatigue.

CBT Sessions
Sessions usually last for approximately one hour. Generally the first two sessions are concerned with an assessment of the problems, the development of a shared (collaborative) understanding of how the problem(s) are perpetuated (kept going) and starting the process of setting goals for therapy. The number of sessions vary in accordance with the nature of the problem(s), however a rough guide would be 6-12. One session may be adequate for some people.

My Approach
I am warm and approachable and this facilitates ease, relaxation and the development of a sound working relationship. In my CBT practice I draw on my experience from different approaches such as Classical (Traditional) Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CCBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Metacognitive Therapy (MCT) and Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT). I am also well adept at using the core person-centred humanistic principles of genuineness, empathy and unconditional positive regard to engage and motivate my clients in us working together to overcome the problem and or build resilience through the use of Strengths-based Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (SB-CBT). I hold a certificate in family life education and this, together with my passion in family life has broadened my CBT skills to working effectively with couples and relationship issues

Years of Experience
I have over 20 years experience as a CBT counsellor in drugs and alcohol dependence (alcoholism) where I worked both as a CBT counsellor and service manager. My work experience also includes adult mental health service (CBT Counsellor and service manager) older adult mental health services (CBT Counsellor and manager) personality disorder services (CBT Counsellor) diabetes (Psychotherapist). I have specialist training in couple therapy Gottman Level 1 and use Gottman Method Couples Therapy in my practice. I also holds a certificate in family life education which has enhanced my skills as a couple therapist.
