James qualified from The Royal Free School of Medicine in 2000 and completed basic surgical training on The Royal Free/Stanmore rotation in London. He undertook Orthopaedic Specialty training on the Southwest Thames rotation and was awarded his CCT in 2014.
Having gained invaluable experience from regional centres of excellence at The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore and St. Georges Hospital, London, he was then awarded two world-renowned fellowships in Brisbane, Australia. The first year, with Dr Bill Donnelly, was dedicated to hip and knee joint replacement (arthroplasty) including cutting edge techniques that utilise both computer-assisted and robotic surgery. This was followed in 2015 by a year with Dr Peter Myers, one of the world's pre-eminent knee and sports injury surgeons, refining his techniques in ligament reconstruction, cartilage & meniscus repair techniques, knee re-alignment osteotomies, meniscal transplantation and joint replacement surgery.
James was appointed as a consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon to Maidstone & Tunbridge Wells NHS trust in 2016, where he specialises in knee injuries, ligament reconstruction and both knee & hip replacement (arthroplasty).

I am a very keen sportsman. My rugby playing days may be over, but my competitive spirit remains and I thoroughly enjoy mountain biking, cycling, snow sports and generally trying to compete with my children. I also coach rugby at the weekends. My family are hugely important and a source of great enjoyment.
Glaxo-Welcome Scholarship - 1999
I have published regularly on knee and hip topics including both traumatic injuries and degenerative disease (arthritis). I have also been fortunate to present this work at both national and international peer-reviewed meetings. Recent publications include:-
The outcome of meniscal root repair - degenerative changes are not a contraindication.
Meniscal transplantation shows good mid to long term outcomes.
The T-capsulotomy is an accurate guide for measuring intra-operative leg length during hip replacement surgery.
Courses offered to GPs
I regularly give talks to GPs and Physiotherapists throughout Kent and Sussex on a range of topics; these include acute knee injuries and when to refer, knee arthritis and up-to-date treatment options, as well as rehabilitation and returning to sport. These can be arranged for a lunchtime or evening session through my secretary.
